Skaro
The district of Skaro was first visited by Fr. Albert Kulawy, OMI from Winnipeg on March 18-29, 1899. His brother Fr. John Kulawy, OMI came on Sep. 24-27, 1899.
After this ordination Francis Olszewski began to visit the Polish settlement at Skaro from Krakow where he resided. Mass was said in homes.
In 1904, Mr. Matthew Huculak donated three acres of land. A chapel was built and Bishop Emile Legal, OMI blessed it on July 5, 1904 under the title of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
In 1917 the construction of a larger church was begun. On Christmas Day 1917 the first mass in the new church was offered by Fr. Anthony Sylla, OMI.
Archbishop Emile Legal, OMI performed the blessing on August 15, 1918.
In June 1919 work began on the construction of a replica of the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, France. Father Ruh made the plans and Father Sylla organized the work until the whole project was completed. The first pilgrimage took place on August 15, 1919. Every year since the pilgrimage attracts thousands of people.
In 1932, a rectory was built at Skaro. Fr. Miksa moved from Edmonton to Skaro.
A new church was built under Fr. I.Lenchowski; it was completed in the fall of 1960. It was blessed on June 16, 1963 by Archbishop Antony Jordan, OMI.
Skarko 60th Anniversary took place in 1978. (cf. WCR Aug. 14, 1978)
On Aug. 14-15, 1993, OLPH Parish, Skaro, held its 75th pilgrimage in honor of Assumption of Mary.
On August 14, 1995, a Mass at Skaro Pilgrimage celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Polish Settlers in Alberta.
